What does ‘Evangelical church’ mean?

Evangelicals? Aren’t they the oddball people you see on the TV or the Internet with their hands raised skyward, getting wound up and asking for money?

Erm … No! They are not real evangelicals, as the Bible describes.

Television has presented this distorted image of an evangelical. The word comes from the Greek in which the New Testament was written originally. It really speaks of the ‘good news’ of the Gospel, ‘glad tidings’ as the Christmas Carols say.

It really means that genuine Christians want to share the message of the Gospel Jesus Christ (to evangelise) with the world today, based on God’s word, the Holy Bible. We believe that Jesus died for our sins, that we might be saved and have peace with God.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

That’s the simple Bible message we share as evangelicals. It’s a message for everyone today.

We also want to show how relevant the word of God is for the present day by putting into practice what God says. We believe God will not add to his word, and look forward to the final revelation when Jesus Christ returns to this world.

When you come into our meeting place you can’t help but notice that the bells you may hear are in a spire on a different building. There are no stained glass windows. Inside there is no altar: not a crucifix or even a cross.

The believers who come together are the church. They, not the building, are the living stones which God is making into a spiritual temple.

Of course, throughout history people have been more concerned with the places of worship than the people who worship. That’s why we have great Cathedrals in our cities, but God is not interested in great historical monuments but in people who He calls by His grace.

For this reason, we seek to tell the world about the wonderful Lord Jesus Christ – and how people can know him personally as their Saviour and Lord.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations … teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you: …” (Matthew 28: 19-20).
